2009 clean up dive campaign on Aqaba beach
Global Report | Oct 20 2009

Public volunteers and navy divers gathered on Saturday under the 2009 Clean Up the World dive campaign in Aqaba to clean the area. Volunteers removed around one tonne of garbage. A huge amount of plastic was obtained through the cleaning process, which was depriving coral life from receiving light and nutrients. Another cleaning up campaign was carried out by around 1000 volunteers, consisting of school students and other volunteers on another Aqaba beach. Royal Marine Conservation Society (JREDS) Executive Director Fadi Sharaiha said that campaigns should be directed towards educating people about dangers surrounding our beaches due to such issues, but maybe education alone is not enough, laws need to be set, and more serious action needs to be taken to make people abide by such laws.
